Character Analysis

Dr. Simian: Middle aged, handsome, dangerous. He moves with a languid purpose, stalking his prey into exhaustion rather than pouncing outright. He radiates and his atmosphere invades the personal space of anyone he focus on. He creates a benign facade that is belied by his intrinsic predatory nature His speech is much like his way of moving; slow and seemingly pleasant. He savors language, giving consideration to each syllable. He prides himself on his gentility and his alluring nature. He enjoys pulling people in only to show them his terrifying interior. He is intrigued by Havilland because he is drawn in by the monster, rather than the prince. Although he is interested by Havilland’s precociousness, he is deeply disturbed by any conversation that touches too close to his true feelings. His deepest desire is to create, and his deepest fear is that he will be consumed by what he feels inside.

Mr. Havilland: Middle aged, fake cheerful, deeply frayed. His movements have a rehearsed, stiff air to them. When he is relaxed he soars, but he is very rarely relaxed these days. Instead he claws his way through his life, every moment a struggle. He prides himself on his professionalism and his skill as a real estate agents. He speech is carefully crafted to put potential buyers at ease, but under the current circumstances he often falls into a place of vocal tension. His facade is not nearly as well constructed as Dr. Simian and he has a much more difficult time retaining the appearance of normality. His deepest desire is conflicted; he desperately wants to return to normalcy but he is inexplicably drawn into the darkness of Dr. Simian’s creation. His greatest fear is that he will be completely swallowed by the house. However, he has an unexpected resilience and strength that prevents Dr. Simian from having his way with him.
